Is Jesus the "Word" of God, and are the Father and the Son both God?

Email Received:

In the New Testament of the Bible, it talks about the "Word" of God. Is that referring to Jesus? Also, who is God—the Father, the Son Jesus, or both?

Ted’s Response:

In the Bible, Jesus is the Word of God. He was/is God (see Was Jesus God?) and was with God the Father before the beginning of the Creation.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1-3)

There is a deep and profound relationship between the Father and Son. Both are facets of the One, True God. Collectively, they are the Creator, Sustainer. By the Authority and direction of the Father, Jesus the Son of God created the universe and everything in it.

He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:15-17)

[God the Father] has spoken to us by his Son, Whom he appointed heir of all things, and through Whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. (Hebrews 1:2,3)

By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of His mouth. (Psalm 33:6)

God’s time frame is infinitely above ours; He exists from everlasting past to everlasting future. Another way to describe Him is "the Alpha and the Omega," which is how Jesus described Himself to the apostle John in the Book of Revelation. At some point, He is returning again, hopefully very soon.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2)

Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. (Revelation 22:12,13)

Eventually, the present heaven and earth will pass away and will be replaced by a new heaven and a new earth, which will last for eternity.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. (Revelation 21:1)

But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. (2 Peter 3:13)

Yet, God’s everlasting and eternal Word never will pass away.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my Word will never pass away. (Matthew 24:35)

All things on earth wither and fade away. However, God and His Word have existed since eternity past and will stand forevermore in eternity future.
