I like Death Valley, CA, and have been there several times.  The last time I was there was Apr. 2, 2012.  I don’t think I’ve ever been there in the summer, but I’d like to—especially in July, which is the hottest month.

The hottest temperature ever recorded on earth was in Death Valley.  On July 10, 1913, it was 134°.  Today, the temperature tied the hottest all-time June temperature in Death Valley of 128°.  The low last night was 97°.  Wow, cool.  I mean: Wow, hot.

This weekend, I wish I were at Badwater Basin in Death Valley, which is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level.  I would want to be eating a ped mak mak (the hottest possible) red curry Thai meal with hot red and green Thai peppers sprinkled all over it.  Mmmm, my mouth is watering.

The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  The portion of the DOMA law that has been overturned is a provision that denies benefits to legally-married same-sex couples.  In effect, it has ruled that same-sex couples should get the same federal benefits as heterosexual couples in states where same-sex marriages are allowed.

Also today, the Supreme Court effectively has struck down California’s same-sex marriage ban, Proposition 8.  The latter, approved by 52.2% of California voters in 2008, stated that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

In 2010, United States District Court Judge Vaughn Walker overturned Proposition 8.  Then the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals panel affirmed the decision that Proposition 8 was unconstitutional.  Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that supporters of Proposition 8 did not have the legal standing to appeal the lower court’s ruling.  This has cleared the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California.

Supreme Court strikes down DOMA and
Prop. 8 ban on same-sex marriage

I support Justice Antonin Scalia’s Blistering Dissent on DOMA.  In 1996, of those who voted in the House of Representatives and in the Senate, 83.6% in the House and 85% in the Senate voted for DOMA.  Interestingly, of the Democrats who voted, 64.2% in the House and 68% in the Senate voted for DOMA.  Moreover, it was President Clinton, a Democrat, who signed DOMA into law.  Thus, when those opposing DOMA claim that it was only “Republican bigots” who were for it, they need to look at the original vote.

Being an advocate of DOMA and Proposition 8, I am very disappointed in these Supreme Court rulings today.  It makes me wonder if the next 7.5 earthquake will hit California sooner rather than later.

This morning at 4:32 a.m. PDT (or 7:32 a.m. EDT), the moon was closer to the earth than at any other time during 2013.  At this closest point, the perigee, the moon is about 221,824 miles away from us.  At its furthest point, or apogee, it will be about 252,581 miles away.

Since the moon is so close, last night and tonight, it is appearing about 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon does.  As such, it is referred to as a “supermoon.”  It will be the closest that the moon gets to the earth until August 2014.

I took a few moon shots very early this morning through various tree branches.  The moon wasn’t very distinct because it was somewhat overcast, but it sure was big and bright.

I also took some shots late tonight.  The moon appeared to be as full as it was last night, but the border was more distinct.  However, it had an orange-yellowish tint to it, although I don’t know why.  I guess there was something in the atmosphere.

Four SeasonsToday is the Summer Solstice, which is the first day of summer in the northern hemisphere.  Summer officially began early this morning at 1:04 a.m. EDT (or late last night at 10:04 p.m. PDT).

The sun will be at the highest point in the sky today, plus there will be the most number of daylight hours of any day during the year.  This is because the earth’s north pole is more inclined toward the sun than it is on any other day.

Although I really like summer, since I like hot weather, I don’t particularly like that the days will be getting shorter and shorter for the next six months.  This will change again at the Winter Solstice on December 21, after which the daylight hours in the northern hemisphere will begin increasing again.

On the equator, the length of daylight, from sunrise to sunset, does not vary much throughout the year.  Also, in most places (except in mountainous regions), the temperatures are pretty constant year-round.  There also is little distinction among the seasons.

Interestingly, although San Diego is nowhere near the equator, there is not much variance of climate or seasons throughout the year, which I like a lot.  This mainly is why San Diego is my favorite city in the USA, maybe even in the world.

General Keith Alexander, director of the National Security Agency (NSA), and other intelligence officials testified before the House Intelligence Committee today.  This follows recent leaks, by Edward Snowden, indicating that the NSA has been monitoring phone records and internet activities.

It is hard to know where national security may be infringing on personal rights.  I’m sure there still are many ways that our personal communications are being monitored that we do not know about.

It has been suspected, for some time, that the Syrian government has been using chemical weapons against its own people.  Previously, President Obama has stated that this would be a “game changer” in how the USA would deal with the Syrian situation.

Today, Mr. Obama indicated that “direct military support” will be provided to the rebels.  However, there has been no indication what types of “military support” might be provided.

US Confirms Syrian Government
Used Chemical Weapons

America’s helping Syria’s rebels against the military forces of President Bashar al-Assad could be a “game changer” in itself.  The Syrian government is maintaining the upper hand over the rebels, mainly via air strikes against them.  I do not see how merely helping to arm the rebels is going to help them defeat Assad’s forces.

I feel that only direct intervention against Assad’s air force, probably by implementing and imposing a “no-fly zone” (which President Bush did in Iraq), can help the rebels be victorious.  But that could result in retaliation by Russia, Iran, and others.

Frankly, there are no good options, as far as I am concerned.  I see all of this leading to a prophetic end-time conflict in the Middle East, probably between major Islamic forces such as Sunnis and Shi’ites.  Israel will be caught in the middle of all the bedlam and mayhem; but ultimately their Messiah, Yeshua/Jesus, will return to annihilate all their enemies.  What a great and awesome day that will be.

It was announced today, by Southern California Edison, that the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station will be closed permanently.  The nuclear plant is located in northern San Diego County.

San Onofre closed permanently

I sometimes take photos of the San Onofre nuclear plant from my car when I am passing by it.  It isn’t easy to get shots without other cars in them, since it is a busy 8-lane highway.

The plant has produced enough power to supply about 1.4 million homes.  Admittedly, I am concerned about its closing, since new sources of power now must be found to replace the 2,200 megawatts of capacity provided by the San Onofre nuclear plant.  If we have a very hot summer, I would expect there to be widespread power outages.  I sure hope not.

Information has come out today indicating that the National Security Agency (NSA) has been snooping around on people’s phone records and internet activities.  If communications and postings of all the terrorists have been being monitored for several years, it makes me wonder why Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsernaev weren’t busted before they bombed the Boston Marathon on Apr. 15.

I do not like to go out of my way to “bash” the belief systems of those with whom I disagree.  However, when someone requests that I give my opinions about a certain group or denomination, sometimes I will.  For instance, someone told me how his wife had come under the influence of Jehovah’s Witnesses and wondered how he could get her back:

After graduating from high school, I knew that I wanted to go through university as quickly as possible to be done with it.  Therefore, I took classes year-round for three years, graduating with a B.S. degree in mathematics and a combined science (physics, chemistry, and biology) minor when I was 20.

One class I had the first summer was Calculus I, which met at 7:30 a.m. five days a week.  Getting up early everyday was more difficult for me than the material in the class, in which I made an A.

I’ve always liked mathematics.  It is a perfect science, and I love perfection—which is one of the main reasons I love God—though I am very far from being perfect myself.

Recently, I saw the following sets of mathematical equations.  I really like their amazing symmetricity.  Only God could have created such an astounding and remarkable science as math.

An eye doctor at NASA, Robert Gibson, O.D., found my eye site and liked some of my graphic images.  He wanted to use some in a training document he is putting together for NASA flight surgeons and biomedical engineers.  Since they’ll be for educational purposes, I was happy to say that he could use them.

In subsequent emails, he told me something about which I had no idea.  Several astronauts have experienced undesirable eye and vision effects while in space for long periods of time.  These changes include the following:

  • disc edema
  • globe flattening
  • choroidal folds
  • cotton wool spots
  • nerve fiber layer thickening
  • decreased near vision
  • a hyperopic shift
  • a degradation in distant and near visual acuity

Some of these are quite significant, and for some astronauts the changes seem to be permanent.  This certainly would seem to put a damper on the possibility of human travel to Mars or further.  Here is a 2¼-minute CNN video (after a 30-second commercial) with Dr. Gibson and others explaining some of these things:

Today is the Christian celebration of Pentecost, exactly seven weeks following Resurrection Day (Easter).  At the first Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4), Jesus’ disciples were filled, supernaturally, with the Holy Spirit (Ruach HaKodesh) and spoke in other “tongues.”  Other God-fearing Jews, who had gathered there from many other nations, heard these men declaring the wonders of God in their own languages (2:5,6,11).

The first Pentecost corresponded to the Jewish celebration of Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks (Leviticus 23:15-22).  On this day, a firstfruits of the wheat harvest was offered to God.  Most calendars usually list Shavuot a few days before Pentecost due to the way the fifty days are counted from Passover week, referred to as the “counting of the omer.”

I believe the fifty-day calculation is made erroneously by most, as explained in this email response:

On the day of Pentecost, Jews “from every nation under heaven” (Acts 2:5) had returned to Jerusalem (following the commandment of Deuteronomy 16:16), indicating that they already had been widely dispersed among the nations by that time.  Today the dispersion is even greater.

After Pentecost, the apostles performed many wonders and miraculous signs (Acts 2:43).  They were the “firstfruits” of all who would receive many of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Anyone who is filled by the Spirit of God can receive some of these gifts from God as well.  Each of us is nothing, but God can make something out of nothing with the Power of His Holy Spirit.

Incriminating evidence against the Obama administration has come out pertaining to the Benghazi attacks on September 11, 2012.  This evidence has been mounting since May 8, when three state department officials—Mark Thompson, Gregory Hicks and Eric Nordstrom—testified before a House committee on the Benghazi attacks.

One of the most glaring pieces of evidence are heavily revised CIA talking points.  Many now are asking who made the revisions and why.

The Benghazi Talking Points

Here are links to the three versions of the talking points, according to date and time:

Friday, September 14, 2012, 11:15 a.m.
Saturday, September 15, 2012, 9:45 a.m.
Saturday, September 15, 2012, 11:26 a.m.

President Barack ObamaIn other news, President Obama said today that the IRS’ targeting of Tea Party groups is “outrageous.”  This is after growing evidence recently that the Internal Revenue Service has been targeting conservative groups for at least two years.

Obama Says IRS Targeting of
Tea Party Groups 'Outrageous'

In my opinion, there were not just a couple of “low-level” IRS employees who were responsible for this.  It had to go much higher than that.  Governors Bobby Jindal (LA) and Scott Walker (WI), in a letter to Barack Obama, have referred to the IRS scandal as “Big Brother come to life.”  I agree.

Mr. Obama claimed that he just learned about the scandal on Friday.  Yet White Press Secretary Jay Carney said recently that the White House counsel heard about this scandal in April.  Is it possible the White House counsel didn’t tell the president of the United States?  I highly doubt it.

Eric HolderIn yet other news, according to Associated Press (AP) lawyers, the Obama Justice Department has secretly accessed two months of telephone records of Associated Press reporters and editors.  The AP’s Chief Executive Officer, Gary Pruitt, referred to it as a “massive and unprecedented intrusion” into how news organizations gather the news.

Under sweeping subpoenas, Justice Department
obtained AP phone records in leak investigation

Mr. Pruitt has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder in which he accused the government of seeking and information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation.  He also demanded the return of the phone records and the destruction of all copies.

All three of the items in my entry today are appalling to me.  They should raise huge red flags for American citizens about their federal government and the Obama administration.  I have little doubt that there are more scandals brewing under the surface.

Max Baucus and Kathleen SebeliusThe implementation of the “Affordable Care Act” or “Obamacare” is becoming a “train wreck.”  So said Democrat Senator Max Baucus to Kathleen Sebelius, the Secretary of Health and Human Services.  Senator Baucus, from Montana, was an author of Obamacare.

The ObamaCare train wreck

On Mar. 21, 2010, when the House of Representatives passed the disastrous Obamacare bill, I noted that it was a “train wreck waiting to happen.”  Millions of Americans will begin to get a clue that this is the case in 2014, when they will have to complete an additional IRS tax form.

In other news, a tall spire was placed today atop One World Trade Center.  This brought the New York City structure to its full height of 1,776 feet.  This points to the year, 1776, that America declared its independence.

Now it is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.  The building is at the northwest corner of the site where the twin World Trade Center towers were destroyed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

15-second slideshow

I know that many people are thrilled about this so-called “Freedom Tower.”  Personally, it doesn’t do much for me, since it reminds me of the tower in ancient Babel.  The people who built that tower did the following:

  1. strove to make a name for themselves before God,
  2. demonstrated that they could gain access to God on their own merits and terms,
  3. refused to humble themselves and to allow God to raise them up in His own time, and
  4. attempted to work themselves “up” and “out” of their realm of sin, which had been present on the earth since the time of Adam and Eve.

I can’t help but think of the nine harbingers, by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, that God has used to warn both ancient Israel and the United States (see more in my Jan. 20, 2012 entry).

Patrick Henry HughesI’m surprised I have not heard about this remarkable young man, Patrick Henry Hughes, or I would have featured him years ago.  He was born with anophthalmia (no eyes) and with hip dysplasia.  As such, he neither can see nor walk.

Yet, he has had an amazing life.  Maintaining a positive attitude, he has become an accomplished musician; he plays both piano and trumpet and also sings.  Furthermore, he has graduated magna cum laude from the University of Louisville with a degree in Spanish, which he speaks fluently.

Check out an incredible 6½-minute video of Patrick.  Also, visit Patrick’s website with numerous photos.  He always seems to have a smile on his face.

Some might think of Patrick as a paradoxical irregularity of nature.  I see him as an amazing creation of God.  After seeing him, I feel ashamed for complaining about anything.  Also, I have the utmost admiration and respect for his parents for being so completely devoted to him, as well as to his two younger brothers.

May 2, 2013

Today, the first Thursday in May, is the National Day of Prayer.  I am reminded of one of my favorite accounts in the Bible.  The great prophet Elijah had scolded Ahab, King of Israel, for abandoning the Lord’s commands and for following those who worshipped the false god Baal.  Elijah wanted to present a small example of the power of the true God of Israel to Ahab and the Israelites.

So the people of Israel, along with 450 prophets of Baal, were summoned to Mount Carmel for a demonstration.  Two bulls were slaughtered and were going to be placed on wood and be burned as sacrifices, one for Baal and one for God.  Elijah stated that whichever god sent down fire to consume a bull, He was the true God.

So the many prophets of Baal prepared their altar and prayed fervently to their god most of the day.  There was no response.  Elijah taunted them, suggesting that maybe their god was deep in thought, busy, traveling, or sleeping.  This caused the prophets of Baal to shout even louder and more frantically to their god, but there continued to be no response from him.

Then Elijah prepared an altar with twelve stones, representing the twelve tribes of Jacob/Israel, and dug a large trench around it.  After the bull was cut into fragments and the pieces were placed on the altar, a considerable amount of water was poured, three times, onto the offering and the wood.  There was so much water that even the trench around the altar was filled.

Elijah proceeded to pray to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel) to demonstrate Himself to be the God of Israel.  Soon thereafter, fire from the Lord came down and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the soil, and the water in the trench.  At this, the Israelites fell prostate and acknowledged that He was the true God.  This awe-inspiring account can be read in 1 Kings 18:16-39.

Baal was/is only one false god.  There are countless false gods in a myriad of hopeless religions throughout the world.  On this National Day of Prayer, make sure you are praying to the real God (not to a counterfeit god) on behalf of the USA and the world.  He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Israel); and only He, ultimately, will save this world from utter self-destruction and annihilation.  Praise be to YHWH!

I am concerned about a report that appears to have come out from the Pentagon.  Christians in the military sharing their faith with others, which might be considered to be “religious proselytization,” eventually could face court-martials for doing so.

Pentagon May Move to Court-Martial
Christian Soldiers Who Share Faith

This reminde me of an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism about a few weeks ago.  A U.S. Army training instructor listed Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit.

See the Religious Extremism list, showing “Evangelical Christianity” at the very top and other Christian groups (and alleged Christian groups) down the list.  Notice the last item on the list: Islamophobia.  What??

I wonder who will decide what is “proselytization” and “extremism” in any given case.  Of course, none of this surprises me, as I fully expect Christian persecution to become much pronounced over the next few years.

Apr. 30, 2013

Radical Christians seem to be bashed way more than radical Muslims.  I like the following article that compares the two.  It seems to pick up where Bill Maher left off recently (see my Apr. 20 entry):

Worth noting the difference between religious radicals

In other news, today is the National Day of Repentance.  God is much more likely to bless those who turn away from doing the things that displease Him and then travel down the road of obedience instead.

In Matthew 24, Jesus addressed His disciples about terrible days to come.  He spoke about such things as nation rising against nation, famines, and earthquakes (Matthew 24:7), as well as about great persecution and killing of believers (24:9).  He even talked about the greatest distress and tribulation ever to come upon the world (24:21).

Some have believed that Jesus was describing things that would happen to the generation living at that time.  Others have felt that He was referring to events that a generation of people far in the future would experience.  Here is a question that I received about this, along with my response:

Apr. 23, 2013

I came across an interesting page about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older (alleged) Boston bomber, with several photos and descriptions of him:

Older Boston bomber brother 'manipulated' his younger sibling and flipped
when his 'only American friend' had his throat slit in unsolved murder

Tamerlan appears to have been a walking time-bomb.  It makes me wonder how many more like him are walking around, waiting to commit appalling and contemptible acts of Jihad, against innocent people, in the name of Allah

I suspect there are a great many Jihadists in America just waiting for their chance to create more mayhem and mass destruction, which I expect to happen in the future.  Clueless and politically-correct Americans need to wake up; more radical Islamic terrorism is on the horizon.

Apr. 22, 2013

I believe that Jesus was God.  Many have tried to convince me that Jesus was a mere man, not God.  Here is an example:

Apr. 20, 2013

Most of the time, Bill Maher (stand-up comedian, television host, political commentator, author and actor) is far too liberal and foul-mouthed for me.  However, I viewed a video clip today of a portion of his show yesterday that stunned me because he was so perceptive and sensible.

Bill’s guest was Brian Levin (Director of the Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism at California State University in San Bernardino), also a liberal.  They talked about the Boston bombers, who were neutralized yesterday, and their Islamic world view.  Mr. Levin talked about Jews and Christians who are “out for God” but do things contrary to what they say.

Surprisingly, Mr. Maher disagreed.  Speaking about Islam, he emphasized, “There’s only one faith, for example, that kills you or wants to kill you if you draw a bad cartoon of the prophet.  There’s only one faith, for example, that kills you or wants to kill you if you if you renounce the faith.”  He added, “An ex-Muslim is a very dangerous thing,” meaning that someone who has renounced Islam is in danger of losing his or her life.  Here is the 4½-minute video clip:

Bill Maher and Brian Levin Discuss Islam

I’m thinking that Bill Maher might have a big target on his back right now with the word “Infidel” stamped on it.

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar TsarnaevVery early this morning in the Boston area, there was a gunfight between police and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (26) and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (19).  These Chechnyan brothers are the prime suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, which took place on Apr. 15.

Photos of the two were released by the FBI yesterday.  During the barrage of bullets this morning, Tamerlan was killed but Dzhokhar escaped.  All day long, much of the Boston area was shut down for fear that Dzhokhar, armed and dangerous, might attack again.

Bombing suspects: Brothers with

Tonight in Watertown, MA, following another gun battle, the wounded Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was taken into custody.  Hopefully, the intense interrogation of this young man will reveal important information as to why these radical Islamic terrorists, presumably, did what they did.

One of my favorite programmers and teachers on God’s Learning Channel (GLC) is Dr. Hollisa Alewine of The Creation Gospel.  She has been doing “The Scarlet Harlot & the Crimson Thread” series on GLC, which has been excellent.

I thought this week’s teaching about the spirit, soul, and body was particularly interesting.  The spirit, soul, and body of the wicked and unsaved will remain dissociated after death and never will be reunited.  However, the spirit, soul, and body of the righteous and saved will be reunited in perfection, at the resurrection, and will remain that way eternally.

The souls of the unsaved will retain their cravings, appetites, obsessions.  Unfortunately, they will have no bodies to satisfy or act out these desires.  What torment that will be.

Probably the majority of “ghost stories” are fiction or have explanations other than actual hauntings.  But, perhaps, some of them involve disembodied, troubled souls returning to places where, in life, they were mistreated, murdered, or experienced some other types of unjustice.

Hollisa’s 27½-minute episode #156 can be watched free online here for the next few weeks.  Alternately, the DVD or audio CD can be purchased here.

This afternoon, two bombs exploded within about 12 seconds of each other in Boston, MA.  The explosions were not far from the finish line of the Boston Marathon, which almost had been completed.

The bombs killed 3 people and injured 264 (originally reported as 176) others.  Many of the latter suffered major trauma from flying shrapnel, including nails and ball bearings, that authorities have said were stuffed into two pressure cookers.  The explosions clearly were an act of terrorism.

Just as Memorial Day is observed in the USA (on the last Monday of May), Israel also observes its own Memorial Day (on the 4th of Iyar).  This day is known as Yom Hazikaron.  It began at sunset today and will continue until sunset tomorrow.

Yom Hazikaron: Israel's Memorial Day

In Israel tonight, Prime Minister Netanyahu stated the following:

The haters of Israel deported us, persecuted us and wished to erase the memory of Israel.  Today, too, there are those who threaten to destroy us. They have not succeeded; they will never succeed. We do not wish to fight, but if forced, we will wield our sword and step out into the battlefield.  Only a mighty defense will ensure we are not harmed.
